Report: Scunthorpe United 6 Moors 0

Scunthorpe United dished out Moors’ heaviest defeat of the season as Lewis Dickman’s side were beaten 6-0 at Glanford Park on Tuesday night.

The Iron roared back to their best form after two defeats from three as they ripped Moors apart from the first whistle, racing into a two-goal lead inside eight minutes.

There was no recovery from there and Moors were already 3-0 down when Ben Pollock’s retaliation earned him a red card on the stroke of half time before things got ugly after the break.

Over 100 Moors fans made the trip to Lincolnshire for a night which offered so much but delivered little as third-placed Moors were put to the sword by Scunthorpe from the off.

Just five minutes had gone when the hosts were awarded a dangerous free-kick 25 yards out and Connor Smith whipped a brilliant strike over the wall and beyond James Montgomery for 1-0.

It got worse just three minutes later when Smith was too easily sent through on goal down the left and then evaded all attempts to dispossess him as he slalomed into the area to prod home his second goal.

Dickman’s men rallied after that and at least began to enjoy some possession, but The Iron went further in front four minutes before half time when Tyler Denton’s mishit cross from the left flew over Montgomery’s head and into the far corner of the net.

The task became almost impossible shortly afterwards when Pollock tussled with Danny Whitehall on the halfway line and the referee quickly marched over and produced a straight red card for the Moors defender.

Scunthorpe extended their advantage nine minutes after the restart when the influential Kian Scales was allowed to charge menacingly towards the Moors box before picking out Jason Law on the right and he drilled a low finish back across Montgomery for 4-0.

The goal of the night arrived just after the hour when Jacob Butterfield emerged from a challenge with two Moors players with the ball at his feet 25 yards out and unleased an unstoppable shot into the top left corner.

Reece Staunton fired a shot just over via a deflection and Glen Taylor saw his header from Mark Anderson’s free-kick fielding comfortably by Iron keeper Fitzsimons.

It was only brief respite for Moors though and Scunthorpe added a sixth goal nine minutes from the end when substitute Michael Kelly’s cross found its way to the back post where Whitehall was unmarked to fire home and complete the misery.
